About the ancient and impressive Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda, it is unnecessary to say too many words. The Pantheon (Pantheon, “temple of all the gods” in Greek) is one of the oldest buildings that have been preserved intact from the time of ancient Rome, including the large and impressive dome with the upper skylight (oculus) and the round one in the center and the large and round columns in the portico at the front of the building. Its external architectural form and its interior design are spectacular, although over the years artworks and internal artistic decorations have been stolen and destroyed, it is still amazing to visit there and think about how we planned and built this huge structure in the ancient Roman times, in the first and second centuries AD, with the means and engineering tools that were available at that time. In the Pantheon, which was converted into a church at the beginning of the seventh century AD (Church of St. Mary and the Martyrs), the famous painter Raphael and several kings and queens of Italy are buried. Entrance to the Pantheon is free. In the square rotunda square adjacent to the front of the Pantheon from the north there are quite a few restaurants and cafes and in the center there is a fountain and an obelisk. To the southeast of the Roman Pantheon, right next to its southeast end, there is a small, square square called Piazza della Minerva (Piazza della Minerva) in the center of which is a statue of a white elephant by Bernini from the 17th century and on its back is a small obelisk and on one of its sides on the right-eastern side is the church of Santa Maria Supra Minerva (Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva) Gothic, from the eighth century, which was initially used as a temple to the goddess Minerva (known mainly as the goddess of wisdom and war in Rome and in Roman mythology, but was also considered the goddess of art, science and trickery) and later, the place was converted into a church. The entrance to the church is free and you can see inside several designed chapels and many works of art.
