Palazzo Ducale:
In San Marco square is also the former official residence of the Doge (supreme judges) – the Doge’s Palace, which until the end of the 19th century was the seat of the Venetian government and the residence of many government officials. The prison is also housed in the same building (probably for those accused in the trials held on the upper floors). The original palace was built in the 9th century and was expanded and renovated over the years and is now mostly used as a museum. Recommended length of visit: about two to two and a half hours.
